Concurrent Exhibits Showcase Variety of Art at the HAAC

The Holland Area Arts Council (HAAC) begins its fall 2007 calendar with several new exhibits that are running concurrently.

The Barbara H. Padnos Gallery houses the Holland Friends of Art’s juried Fine Arts Competition. This show features a variety of two- and three-dimensional work by artists from throughout Michigan. Sculptor Karen Gallup is exhibiting two pieces that are whimsical assemblages of outdated machinery given new life through her creativity. Nearby, Julie Hegudus displays a watercolor entitled Ancient Vessels that depicts an ancient wine cellar rendered meticulously through the use of a resist process. Melissa Morrow’s acrylic painting Whitehall Fens is an interesting blend of abstract and realistic painting techniques.  In addition to these works, there are relief sculptures, ceramic sculpture, drawings, photography and a pulp painting included in the exhibit.

The HAAC’s Main Street Gallery and the Lievense Lobby currently house the Looking Back exhibit, showcasing work by artists who have been instrumental in forming and/or sustaining the Arts Council. A wide sample of work is displayed along with artists’ personal statements, giving visitors a glimpse of the individuals behind the art.  A particularly noteworthy piece is the cast paper by Alice Breese, whose paper torsos look very much like they are from antiquity.

The HAAC’s Armstrong Gallery is currently showing pieces from Jane and Dave Armstrong’s personal collection. Since their first acquisition in1973, the couple has gathered an impressive range of works representing different styles of art and originating from several different countries. Through the generosity of the Armstrongs, the HAAC is able to provide the community an opportunity to see museum quality work in a local gallery.

These exhibits will be open to the public through October 25.
