Special Destination for Visitors and Residents Alike

A product of West Michigan’s booming lumber business in the 1800s, the towns of Montague and Whitehall grew rapidly, only to slow down as lumbering came to an end. By the late 1800s, the White Lake area became known as a vacation haven for Michiganders and Chicagoans, who came via rail and ferry to enjoy the shoreline’s natural beauty.

At that time, tourism became the area’s primary industry and remains so today. Resorts, golf courses, marinas, boat launches, lodging facilities, restaurants, shops and art galleries are found in and around Whitehall and Montague, making the area a true destination for visitors and residents year-round.

Highlights of the White Lake area include summer theater and music series featuring local performers, spectacular fireworks over White Lake for the Fourth of July, outdoor activities throughout the year and special Christmas events in downtown Whitehall and Montague shops and businesses.

Further, many places of interest can be found throughout the area, including the Howmet Playhouse, a historic building that houses one of Michigan’s most well-known summer theatre companies; the White Lake Area Arts Council, featuring several exhibits of local artists throughout the year; the historic White River Light Station; World’s Largest Weathervane (48-foot high, hand-forged aluminum weathervane with a working weather station in the base); the 22.5-mail Hart-to-Whitehall bike trail; and much more.

The White Lake area is truly a relaxing vacation destination. Residents and visitors, both, are charmed by the small town atmosphere, choice of activities and natural beauty of White Lake, the White River and Lake Michigan. Make plans to visit today.
