Relaxation is the Key on Michigan’s Art Coast

Tucked away where the Kalamazoo River meets Lake Michigan are the historic towns of Saugatuck and Douglas. These twin towns have become known as Michigan’s art colony, offering an array of cultural attractions throughout the year. In addition, these quiet towns have built a reputation of offering a quiet refuge from the craziness of every day life.

Saugatuck/Douglas have been well-known throughout Midwest as prime tourist destinations for more than 100 years. In the 1800s, tourists from Chicago and St. Louis came to enjoy the private setting and beautiful beaches. In the 1880s, the area’s art colony began growing and has continued to do so into the present time.

Known as “The Art Coast” of Michigan, Saugatuck/Douglas boasts many attractions for art enthusiasts. There are more than 35 art galleries throughout the towns, the Mason Street Warehouse presents Broadway-quality uptown theatre productions, the Saugatuck Center for the Arts sponsors professional productions and programs year-‘round, the Red Barn Playhouse highlights local talent, the Waterfront Film Festival is known as one of the nation’s top ten, and the Ox-Bow summer art school associated with the Chicago Institute of Art offers student and staff showcases and demonstrations throughout the season.

There is plenty for non-art lovers to do, as well. Several public beaches, including Saugatuck’s renowned Oval Beach, are available for relaxing or strolling. Many golf courses surround the area. History buffs can tour local museums, enjoy the fantastic period architecture or participate in guided walking tours. Outdoor enthusiasts can take a hike to the top of Mt. Baldhead, the area’s largest sand dune.

A wide choice of accommodations and a diverse dining selection are available to fit any tastes. Saugatuck/Douglas is the Bed & Breakfast Capital of the Midwest, and there are several motor lodges, hotels, campgrounds, resorts and cottages rentals available. As far as dining, several restaurants, coffee shops, pastry shops and candy/fudge shops offer their tastes and treats to residents and visitors, alike.
